Trauma‑Aware Instructor Code of Ethics
A professional standard for firearms educators committed to survivor‑centered, ethical, and emotionally safe instruction
This Code of Ethics is designed for instructors who understand that firearms education is not just technical — it’s emotional, neurological, and deeply personal for trauma survivors. It reflects the principles you live by: clarity, dignity, autonomy, and zero exploitation.
1. Respect for Autonomy
Instructors commit to:
-
honoring each student’s pace
-
allowing students to opt out without pressure
-
supporting informed decision‑making
-
never using fear to influence choices
Survivors lead their own learning.
2. Trauma‑Aware Communication
Instructors commit to:
-
using calm, clear language
-
avoiding intimidation or raised voices
-
explaining before demonstrating
-
checking in regularly
Communication should regulate, not overwhelm.
3. Emotional Safety First
Instructors commit to:
-
normalizing breaks
-
recognizing signs of dysregulation
-
never shaming fear or hesitation
-
creating a judgment‑free environment
Emotional safety is as important as physical safety.
4. No Exploitation of Vulnerability
Instructors commit to:
-
never using a survivor’s story for marketing
-
never centering themselves in a student’s journey
-
never leveraging fear to sell classes or gear
-
never framing themselves as a savior
Empowerment is taught — not performed.
5. Evidence‑Based, Ethical Instruction
Instructors commit to:
-
teaching skills grounded in best practices
-
avoiding dramatized scenarios
-
prioritizing safety over theatrics
-
staying within their scope of expertise
Skill replaces spectacle.
6. Boundaries and Professionalism
Instructors commit to:
-
maintaining appropriate boundaries
-
avoiding over‑familiarity or emotional enmeshment
-
respecting student privacy
-
keeping training spaces free from ego and competition
Professionalism protects everyone.
7. Commitment to Continued Learning
Instructors commit to:
-
ongoing trauma‑aware education
-
seeking feedback without defensiveness
-
adapting to student needs
-
staying informed on best practices
Good instructors evolve — they don’t posture.
