Illinois Lt. Governor threatens Illinois voters (“vote for this, or else!”)
Updated: Sep 25, 2020
From Capitol Fax:
Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton warned Thursday that Illinoisans could face an across-the-board income tax hike of at least 20% if voters reject a proposed constitutional amendment to shift the state from a mandated flat-rate tax to a graduated-rate tax based on income.
For weeks, Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritkzer’s administration has cautioned that severe budget cuts could be on the way if voters don’t approve the proposed amendment to overhaul Illinois’ income tax system. But Stratton’s threat that all taxpayers, regardless of income, could face a tax hike unless the amendment passes on Nov. 3 appeared to represent a new shift in strategy for the Pritzker administration.
“To adequately address the budget crisis under our current tax system, lawmakers will be forced to consider raising income taxes on all Illinois residents by at least 20% regardless of their level of income,” Stratton said during a virtual rally on behalf of the pro-amendment Vote Yes for Fairness group that marked the start of voting in Illinois. A 20% increase would raise the state’s current 4.95% flat-rate personal income tax by nearly 1 percentage point to 5.94%. It would raise an estimated $4 billion a year, even more than the projected $3.4 billion that would be generated under a graduated-rate levy enacted if the amendment is ratified, said professor David Merriman, a longtime expert on state finances at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
So let me get this straight......She’s saying “if you don’t vote for this amendment, you’re all going to pay the price if it doesn‘t pass”, right? Seems like she (and the Governor) is breaking Illinois law:
(10 ILCS 5/29-18)(from Ch. 46, par. 29-18)
Sec. 29-18.Conspiracy to prevent vote - Liability). If 2 or more persons conspire to prevent by force, intimidation, threat, deception, forgery or bribery any person from registering to vote, or preventing any person lawfully entitled to vote from voting, or preventing any person from supporting or opposing, in a legal manner, the nomination or election of any person for public or political party office, or a proposition voted upon at any election, or to injure any person or such person's property on account of such vote, support or advocacy, and if one or more persons so conspiring do, attempt or cause to be done, any act in furtherance of the object of such conspiracy, whereby another is injured in his person or property or deprived of having or exercising any right, privilege or immunity secured by the Constitution or laws of the United States or the State of Illinois relating to the conduct of elections, voting, or the nomination or election of candidates for public or political party office, all persons engaged in such conspiracy shall be liable to the party injured or any person affected, in any action or proceeding for redress.

Would holding voters hostage (under the threat of taking more of their money if they don’t vote a certain way or letting them keep more of it if they do) to a proposal that needs to be voted on to be enacted fall under that? What’s worse is the governor himself is dumping his own personal fortune into the advocacy group behind the proposed amendment ($51,000,000+ so far this year). He did this last year as well ($5,000,000) and his use of personal funds to bankroll his pet projects (that will be imposed on the residents of the state) has raised eyebrows.
While this article isn’t gun related, we’ve dealt with the Lt. Governor’s office before in regards to gun stuff. Want to see where legally purchased marijuana tax revenue goes? Hate to say it, but if you buy legal weed in Illinois, you’re helping gun control groups get grants
